Practical construction given statute for long period of time is considered strong evidence of meaning of law and should not be disturbed or overturned except for convincing reasons. 4. Witnesses ? Rules of cross-examination apply to defendant. In a criminal case, defendant, if he is sworn and testifies, is subject - Page 32 to same rules of cross-examination and impeachment as any other witness. 5. Witnesses ? Impeaching defendant. In criminal case, if defendant does not take stand, prior conviction may not be shown to impeach him. 6. Witnesses ? Extent of impeachment. In criminal case, where witness is to be impeached by showing prior offenses, details and circumstances comprising offenses are not admissible. 7. Criminal law ? Instruction on withdrawal of prior conviction from jury. In prosecution for committing lewd and lascivious acts on a child under the age of sixteen, offered instructions requiring withdrawal of judgment of prior conviction from consideration of jury should have been given.
